York Co. councilman charged after accident

York County Councilman Eric Winstead was arrested at his York home early Wednesday morning.

Winstead faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident and driving too fast for conditions.

Eyewitness News was in court in Chester when a judge set bond for Winstead on both charges. He was later released.

The accident happened on Old York Road, near Lowrys, in Chester County at about 2 a.m. Troopers said Winstead was driving toward York County when he lost control of his Toyota Corolla, veered off the right side of the road and struck a sign and then a ditch.

Troopers said Winstead left the car and walked away.

The "school bus stop ahead" sign that Winstead struck is hidden in the tall grass on the roadside.  It appears it was carried a long distance from where it landed.

Eyewitness News found the car at a local wrecker.  It has little damage, but the right front tire is completely gone, and the rim is badly warped.

"Right now, at this moment, my thoughts are with Eric and his family," said York County Council Chairman Britt Blackwell.

It is not the first time the Republican county councilman has been arrested.  Winstead apologized to his family and the public after he was charged with DUI last December.

A York County sheriff's deputy pulled Winstead over and dash cam video was released showing Winstead's field sobriety tests and conversation with the deputy.

Winstead admitted to the offense and paid a fine.

Troopers have not released all the details of the incident early Wednesday.

Blackwell questioned why someone would be arrested for leaving a broken down car.

"If you can't drive the car away and it's two in the morning, that's what anyone would do, is leave the scene to try and get help," he said.

South Carolina state troopers were not able to answer that question after Eyewitness News called several times on Wednesday.

Winstead's bond was set at $445 for driving too fast for conditions and $237.50 for leaving the scene of an accident.

He did not make any comment in court about the incident.

’50 Shades’ won’t be on shelves in Gaston-Lincoln libraries

Avid readers won’t find any copies of a New York Times Bestseller on the shelves of a local library any time soon.

The Gaston-Lincoln Regional Library said it did not order any copies of “Fifty Shades of Grey” because of the book’s erotic content.

The book is the first in a series set in Seattle that traces the relationship between a college graduate and a young businessman. It has garnered national attention because it contains erotic scenes featuring elements of the BDSM lifestyle.

The second and third books in the series are titled “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed” respectively.

Mecklenburg County libraries do offer the book, but there is a waiting list. All of the library system’s copies have been checked out and there is a request list 800 names deep waiting to check out the book.

Ad attacking Romney’s business record has local ties

President Obama is running a new ad attacking Mitt Romney's business record.

The ad is about GST Steel in Kansas City in the '90s.  In 1993, Romney and his partners at Bain Capital took control of the company.  Bain combined GST with Georgetown Steel in South Carolina, renamed the corporation GS Industries and put its headquarters in Charlotte.

But the company got into debt.  It went bankrupt in 2001.

The ad says hundreds of workers lost benefits and jobs.

One former steelworker in the ad says, "I was devastated.  It makes me angry. Those guys were all rich.  They'll all have more money than they'll ever spend, yet they didn't have the money to take care of the very people that made the money for them."

They blame Romney.  One says, "We view Mitt Romney as a job destroyer."

But Romney supporters say Romney was more involved in investing in the steel company than running it.  And, they point out, he left Bain Capital in 1999, well before the bankruptcy and layoffs.

Romney spokeswoman Sara Pompei emailed, "Mitt Romney helped create more jobs in his private sector experience and more jobs as governor of Massachusetts than President Obama has for the entire nation."

Even though the ad has Charlotte and South Carolina ties, it is not airing on TV in either North or South Carolina.  Since the ad focuses on a steel company, it's only running in five battleground states, mostly in the rust belt.
